Department of English, Modern European and Other Foreign Languages
The Department of English was in existence at the inception of the Garhwal University in 1973. Later it was renamed as 'Department of English, Modern European and Other Foreign Languages'. Presently it offers under graduate, post graduate and Ph.D. programmes in all the three campuses of the University. In addition, the Department also offers M. Phil. programme in English at Birla Campus, Srinagar. A Certificate Course in 'Spoken English' and Diploma Course in 'Form and Research Methodology of Thesis Writing' are also offered by the Department. The Department has emerged as the major centre for teaching and research in literature and culture of India, South Asia, Europe, Canada, Australia and America. The faculty members of the Department have been actively engaged in research and presently one major research project on Indian Feminism sponsored by UGC is in progress at the Department.
The Department lays emphasis on imparting learning to the students in a manner that hones their communicative skills and critical thinking. The teaching method is interactive, with presentations and seminars held regularly along with the regular talk and chalk method. This year the Department at Tehri campus has established one unit of the Language laboratory and hopes to add to this facility of Computer Assisted language learning in the future.
During the year 2011-12 the faculty members have published 24 research papers and 01 book and have also participated in 03 Seminars/Workshops/Conferences.
