Brief Profile of the Department
The Department of Political Science is functioning since the inception of the University.The department is one of the biggest department of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of the HNB Garhwal (Central) University Srinagar, Garhwal, as presently maximum number of students are studying Political Science at UG & PG level. At present a large number of students are also engaged in Ph.D. programme under the supervision of the teachers of the department. As the department desires and aims to create an engaging atmosphere for the students therefore in the last few years a number of national seminars as well as one international seminar has been organised by the department. To expose the students and also provide them an opportunity to interact with the scholars and experts of the various aspects of political science, international relations and research methodology, a number of visiting faculty and scholars have been invited by the department for delivering lecture. The department by taking the benefit of the scholars of the ministry of external affairs organised distinguished lecture series. The department has also hosted Fulbright scholar to provide an opportunity to the students to gain advantage of the expertise of the foreign scholars.
The faculty members of the department have been for decades researching on the issues of national, international and regional importance. The focus of the regional issues has been on development administration, local self government (both rural & urban) and issues and concerns like livelihood in the mountains, ecological and environmental issues, sustainable development, good governance, woman issues etc. The focus of international issues has been on the study of foreign relations of India with country like OS, Pakistan, China as well as the issues related to global terrorism
On account of the researchers of the department the UGC has included the department under its special assistance programme since 2007 and after the completion of 5 year the department has been upgraded to SAP-DRS II from 2013 to further 5 year. During the 2007 to 2012 period of DRS 1 the department worked on the woman empowerment and regional development in Garhwal Himalayas and in the DRS II phase the thrust areas are importance of environmental security and green economy in India and good governance, Peoples participation and Uttrakhand's development as well as a small state. To work on these thrust areas a proper plan has been formulated and under this plan and the PhD and Pre PhD students has been also trained in the survey methods.
The department has completed a number of major research projects financed by the ICSSR, UGC and other agencies.
