D.Phil in Political Science

Masters in Political Science

There shall be Nine Papers out of which a candidate shall study four papers in M.A. Previous and Five papers in M.A. Final.

Three Papers are Compulsory in M.A. Previous and One Paper (Paper IV) is Optional.

In M.A. (Final) Paper V, VI, VII and IX (Viva-Voce) shall be Compulsory and Paper VIII shall be Optional. But Dissertation (VIII – d ) as an Optional Paper can be opted only by regular students with at least 50% marks in M.A. previous examination.

Each paper will carry 100 marks in both M.A. Previous and M.A. Final.

New Courses being offered by the department:

The department has introduced a one year Post Graduate Diploma Course on the Human Rights and Duties Education. More information about this diploma course could be collected from the department.

Duration of the Course: One academic year full time regular course.

Eligibility: Bachelor's Degree in any discipline with 45% marks. Only those candidates who are graduates of the HNB Garhwal University or any other University or Institution recognized by the HNB Garhwal University would be eligible for admission.

Medium: The medium of the examination and instruction will be both English and Hindi.

Admission: Admission will be made on the basis of merit and interview. The candidates having less than 45 % marks in graduation will not be considered eligible for admission.

Number of Seats: Total number of seats for this one year diploma course is20 which may be increased in future, depending on the availability of students.

Fee Structure: Rs. 6,000/= fixed annual.

Examination Fee : It would be same as prescribed by the University for other Master Degree Courses.

The Course Contents : There would be three written papers of 100 marks each and one field based dissertation of 100 marks and Viva- Voce of 100 marks.

Pass Marks and Division : The minimum pass marks in each paper would be 45% and aggregate of all papers would also be 45%. The candidates securing 60% marks or more in the aggregate of all papers shall be declared to have passed in first division and rest in the second division. There will not be third division. There shall not be any improvement paper for the diploma course.

Most of the students have got placements in the Government Degree Colleges, Private colleges, and Intermediate colleges, provincial civil services, NGO etc

Any Other Relevant information

The department is contributing in various ways in the field of research and academic activities.

The UGC has sanctioned SAP-DRS programme to the department for five years to promote and encourage more fruitful research in the field of women empowerment and regional development. The department is working towards the goal of emerging as a nodal agency for the study, information and research on these issues.

In last few years the teaching members of the department have frequently visited different national and international academic institutions to deliver invited lectures and also to participate in International and National Seminar and Conferences in India and abroad. The department has also been frequently organizing national seminars/ conference/ workshops and training programmes for the students.

The prestigious Fulbright Fellowship was awarded to Prof. Annpurna Nautiyal Head, Department of Political Science to teach India’s foreign policy in the department of Public and International Affairs at the George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia during the spring semester from January 2006 to May 2006.

Some other members of the department have also got National Awards for their writings and contributions in the field of Social Service.

The faculty of the department is also contributing towards the growth of the subject by writing/ editing standard text books and reference books. Some text books have been produced and published in Hindi also which can be considered an important contribution of the faculty towards the discipline as there is not much literature or text books available for the students of Hindi medium.

All the computers of the department have been networked with internet facility through the broad band. This has also encouraged the use of modern methods of teaching and communication among the faculty.
