About the department

        The Garhwal University, which is now known as H.N.B. Garhwal University, since its inception has focused on job-oriented / professional courses. It was in view of the employment need of the region. As a result, it has started Department of Journalism with some other job-oriented / professional courses in 1976 at Birla Campus , Srinagar ( Garhwal). A number of such job-oriented / professional courses are being conducted by this University today. The nomenclature of the Department of Journalism was changed to Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication from 18 September ,2000 after the consent of the Chancellor / Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

        The Department of Journalism Initially started the Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism with the intake of 15 students in 1976. It proved of great success in providing jobs to those who have passed this course. This Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism course was up-graded into degree course as Bachelorof Journalism (After Graduation) in 1985-86. After it, in 1991-92, Master of Journalism (M.J.) Degree Course was also commenced by this department.

        In 1997-98 with updating of M.J. Course, it was changed into Master of Journalism and Mass Communication (M.J.M.C.). Later on, following the directions and guidelines of University Grant Commission, New Delhi the Bachelor of Journalism course and Master of Journalism and Mass Communication courses were replaced by the M.A. (Mass Communication), an integrated two year degree course divided into four semesters from 2002-2003 by the Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication. The initial intake for M.A. (Mass Communication) was restricted to 25 seats for each semester. The admission to this course is made through Entrance Test which is conducted normally in the month of June / July each year. Now, the intake for M.A. (Mass Communication) from the forthcoming session 2009-10 may increase to 40 seats for I st semester.

        At the under-graduate level, in pursuance of the U.G.C. directions, a three year Degree course - B.A.(Honours) Mass Communication was started from the Academic Session 2005-06 for the students who have passed 10+2 / Intermediate examination with the intake of 40 students for each year. The intake may increase to 60 seats from the forth coming session 2009-10, for first year.

        A Certificate Course in Mass Communication and Video Production for the students of Second year of B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. of Srinagar Campus was started from 2005-06 with the intake of 40 seats. Presently, admission to this course have been ceased due to some unavoidable circumstances but one year Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication course has been also started from the academic session 2008-09 with the intake of 40 students.
 New Building  :  A  new building of the Centre,  to be known as Jan Sanchar Bhavan is under construction.
