About the department-
The ‘Department of Himalayan Aquatic Biodiversity’ came into existence in the year 2010
and the department is dedicated for imparting knowledge and conducting researches on
various facet of the Himalayan region. Himalaya, because of its uniqueness has always been
the centre of attraction of researchers across the globe. Its beauty, biodiversity, sensitivity and
vulnerability make it a good resource of research. The idea behind the establishment of the
department is to provide opportunities to the eager, young minds for in depth studies and
research in exploration and conservation of aquatic biodiversity and other relevant faunal and
floral diversity across the Himalayan range.
Since, its inception the department is conducting post graduate classes. For each academic
session eleven (11) inquisitive students are selected via screening for M.Sc. in Himalayan
Aquatic Biodiversity (HAB). Students with high motivation and passion towards aquatic
biodiversity studies can appear for the University entrance test, conducted yearly. Graduates
in life science or Forestry, Aquaculture and Fishery Science are eligible to apply for the
entrance test. The four-semester regular teaching programme also includes timely internal
assessment, seminars, project assignments and group discussions. M.Sc. in Himalayan
Aquatic Biodiversity aims to provide students with knowledge, skill and expertise in different
facets of aquatic biodiversity. The content of the programme is designed to train human
resources in aquatic ecology, water quality assessment, conservation biology and sustainable
use of aquatic resources. The department has well equipped laboratory for conducting
experiments as per the course requirement. Along with rigorous course curriculum, a variety
of extra-curricular activities are regularly conducted to aware the students towards several
aspects in conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity.
The department also provide opportunity for Ph.D. in various aspects of aquatic biodiversity
and water resource management. The mode of selection for Ph.D. is university entrance test
followed by interview/viva-voice. The Ph.D. programme provides opportunity to the students
who aspire to work in various disciplines like Ecology, Aquatic biology, Taxonomy and
Climate change. The successful students are encouraged to explore career avenues in
universities, several governmental and non-governmental research organisations as Pollution
Control Board, Forest Departments, Fisheries Departments, National Biodiversity Authority,
Zoological Survey of India, Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, Namame
Gange project, various NGOs and many more.
The department presently has young faculty members having vast teaching and research
experience in various aspects of biodiversity. They have been awarded fellowships in the past
from various prestigious scientific communities like CSIR-UGC NET, GATE, ICAR-NET.
Faculty members regularly participate in International and National
seminars/symposia/conferences and have published many research papers/articles in the
scientific Journals of National and International reputation. The faculty is actively engaged in
different area of research like freshwater ecology, aquatic biodiversity, water pollution and
climate change
