Research

Research Activities:

The faculty members are engaged in various research activities right from the inception of the department. Faculty members and other researchers have published more than 500 research publications in the National and International journals of repute. Major thrust areas of research include: Taxonomy and Ethnobotany, Aerobiology, Palynology, Remote Sensing Applications, Pyrology including Conservation and Management, Medicinal Plants, Vegetation and Nutrient dynamics, Physiology and Ecology of High Altitude Plants, Seed Biology, Mushroom research, Extremophiles, etc.

The department has produced more than 200 Ph.D. scholars so far. The distinguished faculty members have also published valuable books on Himalayan Vegetation and related aspects. Some of the publications are as follows:

The Department feels proud that many of its alumni are holding high positions at national level e.g., Vice Chancellor, Chief Conservator of Forests, Directors, Agricultural Scientists, Administrative services, Professors and many more. Likewise, the students after obtaining postgraduate degree in Microbiology are offering their services in several pharmaceutical companies and prestigious institutions.

Besides teaching and research the department has conducted several seminars and workshops in the past. Recently a workshop cum training programme for employment of rural women folk through honey production sponsored by DBT was conducted by the Department. The department is also engaged in extension services for the benefit of the villagers through conducting awareness programmes. In this series two training programmes /workshops have been conducted in 2011 with the help of Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, and New Delhi for the women of Pindar valley in Distt. Chamoli of Uttarakhand to train them in modern methods of bee keeping strengthening   their economy.

Herbarium

The Department has a moderate Herbarium representing the vascular plants of the Himalayan region. The Herbarium is recognized by International Association of Plant Taxonomists and has been assigned the acronym ‘GUH’. There are more than 20,000 accessions of angiosperms, gymnosperms and pteridophytes representing diversified habitats of Himalaya ranging from foot hills to alpines.

Museum

The Ethnobotanical Museum of the department has several collections of plant products of traditional values including folk medicines, fibres, timbers and plants of miscellaneous use. The department is looking for the establishment of a Botanical Garden at the Chauras Campus. In the regional and public interest, department has developed sound proposals to establish a Mushroom Research Centre, Apiculture Research Centre and Wild Forest Fire Research Centre at HNB Garhwal University.

Library

The Department has a rich library with more than 2000 books and journals and other relevant information for teaching and research. Besides there are more than 5,000 text and reference books on plant sciences in the Central Library.

Central Facilities

The department has proposals to develop central facilities viz., computer room, inoculation room, and instrumentation room.

The Department is also running UG and PG courses at two other campuses of the University.

B G R Campus, Pauri

The campus was initially established as a Government College in 1971 and later became a campus of the State University and subsequently a campus of the Central University. The campus enjoys a pleasant climate owing to its geographical location at 1750 m elevation. The Department is progressing well and imparting quality teaching in Botany both at UG and PG levels. The students  intake is 175 at UG, 20 at PG and 12 at research level. There are two permanent faculties and four part time faculties. The research work is focused in Montane Ecology and Biotechnology.

SRT Campus Badshahithaul, New Tehri

This is a Post-Graduate department which teaches all basic aspects of Botany. The campus was initially established as a Government College in 1972 and later became a campus of the State University and subsequently a campus of the Central University. The campus department started teaching PG course in Botany in 1992. The student intake of the Department is 200 at UG level, 20 at PG level and 10 at research level. Two permanent faculty and three part time faculty share the departmental academic activities. The research area includes Systematics, Plant Diversity and Plant Pathology.

Achievements

Since its inception the department has the distinction of having renowned scientists as its Head of the Department. All of them have been honored with various national academic awards.
