The Department of Journalism was established in 1976 at Birla Campus, Srinagar (Garhwal). Later on, the nomenclature of the department was changed to ‘Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication’ from 18 September, 2000. Under the New Education Policy-2020, a new syllabus of B.A.(Honours.) Journalism and mass Communication has come into effect from the academic year 2022-23 from First semester onwards. The department also runs a two-year M.A. (Journalism and Mass Communication) and Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communication too.
The Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication has well equipped laboratories for print media and electronic media (Audio-Visual) including studio for the practical training of students. These facilities ensure that the students are well-trained in various aspects of and skills related to mass communication. The department has the facility of class rooms, seminar hall, conference room, photography lab and departmental library. Provisions for the students have been made for extensive field and institutional visits/Apprenticeship training in the courses being offered by the department. In addition to the permanent faculty, the department also engages guest faculty to augment the strength of the faculty to facilitate teaching in the department.
The courses being offered by the department provide ample job opportunities to students in the field of journalism and mass communication. The alumni of the department have been serving several prestigious organizations of the print and electronic media.
