The Department of Anthropology was established in 1976 at Srinagar campus of the University. Since then, it is the only Department imparting Anthropological knowledge and training in Uttarakhand Himalaya. The department offers courses i.e., B.A/B.Sc. and M.A/M.Sc. Besides, offering Ph.D, Degree in various sub discipline of the subject like Physical, Social, Archaeological, linguistic and Forensic Science.
The department imparts specialization in Advanced Physical Anthropology and Advanced Social Anthropology, at the post-graduate level. The department has a well equipped 'Museum of Himalayan Cultural Heritage', depicting various dimensions of tribal and rural culture of the Himalaya.
Being the only Department in the Himalaya, its foremost commitment is to understand the problems and issues that are confronting various hill population groups especially the tribals. In the curriculum, every attempt is made to analyse and understand anthropological problems of the Himalaya changes in the society. Students are encouraged to take up projects having a direct relevance to the development of Himalayan communities.
Also, at SRT campus Badshahi Thaul, Tehri the Department was established in the year 1997-98 both at under graduate level as well as post graduate level on the demand of the students. At present the department is coordinated by a regular faculty of other department and teaching is pursued by part time faculty.
