1-Brief Information about Department:

The Department of Commerce was established in 1976 when globalisation and liberalisation were just unthought and unheard terrain in commercial and economic discourse. Since then the department has been providing quality education to the undergraduate and post graduate students and catering the need of the industry and service sector of the region in particular and the country in general. The huge migration from the region in search of job or the temptation for serving in the army and paramilitary forces was the general trend of employment among the youth during the 70s. At this crucial juncture the department of Commerce was established and offered various programmes and made efforts to attract the youth towards private and public sector jobs as well.

Despite the tough geo-physical features and remoteness of the region, the department has enthusiastically set a vision “To achieve excellence in the field of commerce and management education through effective teaching learning process, industrial linkages, networking and to train students in becoming excellent professionals”. In view of the practicability and applicability we have been trying that the vision of the department should not remain a dream only, that’s why we are struggling hard to develop a team of competent and qualified professionals in order to meet the demand of industry and business as a mission.

2-Courses Offered:

At present the Department of Commerce is providing quality education at undergraduate, post graduate and Ph. D level. Where B. Com, M. Com and Ph. D are the regular programmes and Diploma in Advertising, Sales Promotion and Sales Management (DASPSM) is being offered as an add-on course sponsored by the UGC. The department has sufficient infrastructure facilities such as classrooms, computer lab, library, seminar hall, reading room, faculty rooms etc. to run the courses. The departmental library is equipped with rich collection of books and national and international journals of repute. Wi-fi facility is available for the PG and Ph. D. students.

The CBCS pattern was introduced during the academic session 2015-16 at UG and PG level wherein continuous monitoring of learning ability of students is assessed. Additionally, the department has introduced NEP 2020 from the academic session 2022 and has revised its curriculum as per the directions of UGC and University, wherein multidisciplinary, skill enhancement and value added courses are incorporated. As per NEP 2020, the undergraduate programme with research/ honours (B.Com.) shall be of four-years duration, with multiple entry and exit points and re-entry options. The four years interdisciplinary/ multidisciplinary Bachelor's Programme (B. Com.) is the preferred option as it allows the opportunity to experience the full range of holistic and multidisciplinary education with a focus on major and minor subjects as per the student's preference. The programme may also lead to a degree with research, if the student completes a rigorous research project/ dissertation in the major area(s) of study during eight semesters. The Department is having 11 faculty positions and at present 7 faculty members are working against 11 sanctioned posts at Srinagar Campus. The teaching work load is also shared by the research scholars as and when required.
