About Department
The Department of Philosophy was started initially with the Undergraduate classes in 1980 and thereafter upgraded to Postgraduate level. The Postgraduate program began from 1990 onwards. To strengthen the domain of research, the doctoral degree program was introduced in the year 1992.In 2001, the department started PG Diploma course in Yoga under self finance mode in repose to UGC sponsored relevant scheme.br The students and research scholars of the department have marked out their presence in achieving fellowships from Indian Council of Philosophical Research, New Delhi, for Doctoral/Post Doctoral levels. The faculty of the departments actively engaged in teaching and research works, as well as preparing students for the innovative job prospects in various fields.
As a result, apart from a career in teaching, the students have registered their presence in the fields of Yoga, Naturopathy, Management courses, Banking services and Administrative services. In addition to conducting teaching and research in the traditional Indian and Western Philosophy, the members of the faculty are striving hard to materialize the implications of Philosophical Theories by the applied aspect of philosophy and stressing on a step in this direction is the introduction of courses in applied Ethics and Yoga.
The department has already completed five projects with the financial assistance of Indian Council of Philosophical Research, MHRD Govt. of India and University Grants Commission, New Delhi respectively.
The department has to its credit of ten books published and more than seventy research papers that appeared in the Regional, National and International Journals of Philosophy. The Faculty contributed research papers in more than hundred Regional, National and International conferences/seminars/workshop/appreciation courses. The members of the faculty have also registered their presence on the editorial boards of a couple of publications.
Besides, academic activities, the members of the department are actively engaged in managing the affairs of the corporate life of university in the campus in the capacity of Assistant Dean Students’ Welfare, Assistant Proctor, Assistant Examination Controller, NSS Program Officer and Sports Activities Counseling Cells and Convener of admission Committees.
Despite the limited number, only three permanent faculty members, the department is sincerely engaged to accomplish academic responsibilities of teaching and researches in the assigned fields and also supporting the corporate life of the university Campus.
Our Vision
The department has focused attention on carrying quality research work in the field of Indian and western Metaphysics, Epistemology, applied aspects of Social and Ethical Philosophy, Yoga and moral implications to the practical field. For the above purpose, the department has envisioned establishing the computer and net facility and has set up a research library.
The department has highlighting practical application of yoga-practices on the assumption that the impact of practical part could be more effective if reinforced by knowledge of the philosophy.
For attracting more students towards the subject, the department plans to guide the students for competitive examinations covering provincial and central services. The task is under active consideration.
The department has formulated plans to interact with students at school level/intermediate level education. The purpose is to contact and exchange views on the value philosophy/value education. A national seminar on value education had been organized by the department in the year 2003.
The department has already organized four national seminars, two regional seminars, one session of Indian Philosophical Congress and one session of Akhial Bhartiya Darshan Parishad. Through such venues like seminars, conferences and workshops, the students of masters and research degree levels are being provided greater exposure to knowledge and expertise in the discipline concerned.
The department has plan to search innovative venue for the students of Philosophy by identifying the interdisciplinary use of the subject in the fields of Management, Philosophy of Science, providing foundation for the psychological counseling, Political Philosophy and Philosophy of Education, understanding cross-cultural identity and resolving social problems etc.
The department has plans to start self- finance courses in Applied Philosophy and Professional Ethics. For this purpose, the department has already approached and submitted the proposal for the financial assistance at the initial stage to the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. The syllabus and course design has already been approved in the meeting of Board of Studies.
