Research

  1. Research/Academic activities  
  • The activities undertaken by the Department on regular basis include plantation and production of various tropical, subtropical, temperate and minor/ wild/ underutilized fruits of Himalayan region;
  • Production of different tropical, subtropical and temperate vegetables including off-season and protected cultivation of vegetables suitable for hilly region;
  • Development of suitable parents especially french bean, bitter gourd and cucumber to develop superior F1 s hybrids through diallel and line x tester mating design in cheaper rates for local farmers.
  • Assessment of superior organic manure for the cultivation of horticultural crops under valley conditions.
  • Plantation of several species of ornamental and flowering trees, shrubs, climbers, herbs, pot and indoor plants;
  • Propagation and plantation of different kinds of medicinal and aromatic trees, shrubs, herbs.
  • The research activities include plant bioregulators’ (PBRs) effects on growth, flowering, yield and quality parameters;
  • Evaluation of ultra-high density orcharding of various fruit crops under valley condition of Garhwal Himalaya.
  • Exploitation of vegetable and spices germplasm through evaluation, genetic variability, inter-relationship of traits and diversity.
  • Standardization of nutritional requirement for horticultural crops under Srinagar valley condition;
  • Utilization of integrated nutrient management for minimizing the cost of cultivation with quality production of horticultural crops.
  • Work on standardization of propagation techniques in horticultural crops including fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants;
  • Germplasm resources collection of rare horticultural plants for crop improvement programmes; and Varietal selection and suitability of vegetables.
  • The extension activities include supply of plant materials to the farmers and poor people, demonstration on production technologies, Horticultural extension lecturers in villages, meetings and short trainings for farmers on different horticultural aspects.
  • The Department has also undertaken Avenue plantation and overall beautification of Chauras Campus of the University as an activity of Landscaping
